Urgent Amazon, Asda and Tiktok shop product recalls over safety concerns

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) routinely withdraws products from circulation due to various concerns including safety hazards and manufacturing defects.
In recent weeks, OPSS has removed items from shop floors and, in certain instances, prevented products from crossing borders, reports the Liverpool Echo.
According to OPSS, its core mission is to “protect people and places from product-related harm, ensuring consumers and businesses can buy and sell products with confidence.”
This government body oversees the regulation of numerous sectors. OPSS provides information regarding products that pose risks to health and safety.
Their regulatory scope excludes food, medicines, and vehicles, with various retailers having withdrawn products under their guidance. They enforce regulations throughout the entire product journey from design, certification and manufacturing through to labelling, distribution, final use and safe disposal.
Items are withdrawn due to safety worries, faults, or failure to meet regulatory standards amongst other factors. The most recent product recalls can be found below:
Amazon

A Children’s Busy Board available through Amazon has been withdrawn as it poses a “serious risk” of choking. The item presents a significant choking hazard as the keys and padlock can fit completely within a small parts cylinder.

Product description: A wooden busy board with various stimulation toys including a clock face with hands, telephone with buttons, yellow fidget spinner and battery-operated steering wheel with buttons The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a recall for a product following a safety report. The OPSS website warns: “The product presents a serious risk of choking as the keys and (once released from the lock) padlock fit entirely inside a small parts cylinder.
“Both the steering wheel and light are battery operated with no screw to secure the compartment. A young child may put these small parts in their mouth and choke.”
The hazard notice also mentioned that the product needs better documentation and markings and fails to comply with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. The item was stopped at the border and destroyed.

A recall has been announced for an Electric Nail File Drill sold via TikTok due to a “serious risk” of fire. The product poses a serious risk of fire because the fuse lacks adequate granular filler.
It has been recalled from end users, and the online marketplace has removed the listing.
Product name: Electrical appliances and equipment – Personal Warming/Massaging (Powered).
Brand: Yiwu Juheng Automotive Supplies Co., Ltd.
Product description: This is a black electric nail file sold in a pink box with ‘Mercedes 2000’ on the front. The listing mentions “Colour: w12595286”, although this does not appear on the actual product packaging.
OPSS has issued a warning stating: “The product presents a serious risk of fire as the fuse within the plug has insufficient granular filler. The filler is required to ensure the safe operation of the fuse under fault conditions, and its absence could lead to the plug overheating and/or exploding.
“The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994.”
Following these concerns, the product has been recalled from end users. Consumers are advised to immediately cease using this product and get in touch with the TikTok seller or TikTok Shop Customer Service team to seek redress.

ASDA has also announced a product recall for George Baby 3-Pack Rompers due to a potential injury hazard. The rompers’ zips may have sharp edges, posing a risk of injuries, leading to the recall from end users.

John Lewis and Partners have announced a recall of their Carnival Floor Cushion after routine testing revealed that it failed to meet fire safety standards, posing a potential fire risk if exposed to an ignition source.
