In a significant food safety alert, Mondelēz Global LLC has issued a voluntary recall of select Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches due to a packaging error that could pose serious health risks to individuals with peanut allergies. The recall, announced on July 8, 2025, affects products distributed nationwide, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Nature of the Recall

The issue stems from a mislabeling incident where some individually wrapped Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches were mistakenly packaged in wrappers labeled as Ritz Cheese Cracker Sandwiches. While the outer cartons correctly indicate the presence of peanuts, the individual packages inside do not, potentially leading to accidental consumption by those with peanut allergies.

The affected products include 8-count, 20-count, and 40-count cartons of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches, as well as 20-count Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Packs. The specific UPC codes and “Best When Used By” dates range from November 1 to November 9, 2025, and January 2 to January 22, 2026.

Health Implications

Peanut allergies are among the most common and severe food allergies, capable of triggering life-threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis. The mislabeling error increases the risk of accidental exposure, particularly in settings like schools and camps where peanut-free policies are in place.

As of the recall announcement, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported. However, consumers with peanut allergies are strongly advised not to consume the affected products and to discard them immediately. For those without peanut allergies, the products are considered safe to eat.

Company Response and Consumer Guidance

Mondelēz Global LLC has identified the root cause of the error as a defect in the packaging film supplied by a third-party vendor. The company is working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to address the issue and prevent future occurrences.

Consumers seeking more information or wishing to report concerns can contact Mondelēz Global LLC at 1-844-366-1171. The company has also provided images and detailed information about the recalled products on the FDA’s website to assist consumers in identifying the affected items.
