RECALL: More illnesses amid Salmonella outbreak in Canada

More illnesses have been confirmed amid a Salmonella outbreak in Canada that’s linked to certain meat products, officials say.

In its most recent update published Tuesday, the Public Health Agency of Canada said there have now been 86 confirmed illnesses.

It marks an increase of two illnesses from the agency’s previous update last Friday.

There have been nine hospitalizations, which is unchanged.

Of the confirmed Salmonella cases, 17 were in Ontario (which is where the two newly reported cases were), 67 were in Alberta, one was in Manitoba, and one was in British Columbia.

The B.C. case was related to travel to Alberta, officials said.

No deaths have been reported.

People became sick between mid-April and late June, officials said.

Outbreak linked to salami

Multiple products have been recalled in connection with the outbreak.

Initially, last month the Bona brand Mild Genova Salami, Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, and Rea Genoa Salami Hot were the affected products.

Earlier this week, a fourth product was added: Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet.

The Bona salami came in variable sizes, doesn’t have a UPC number and has the code 5035 226.

The Rea sweet salami also came in variable sizes, has the UPC number 8 41571 04226 2 and the codes 5035 226 and 5049 226.

The Rea hot salami also came in various sizes, has the UPC number 8 41571 04228 6, as well as the codes 5020 228 and 5035 228.

And lastly, the Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet is variable in size, has the UPC number 8 41571 04220 0 and the code 5050 224.

The products were distributed to grocery stores, specialty markets, restaurants, cafes, delis, and butcher shops.

“These products may have been used in prepared products like sandwiches or sold at deli counters,” PHAC said.

Many became ill after eating salami in prepared sandwiches or eating salami that was bought from deli counters, PHAC said.

The first three products were distributed to Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, while the Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet was distributed to Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

“Consumers or establishments who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled products are advised to contact their retailer or supplier where the products were purchased,” PHAC said.

“Consumers who have purchased a prepared sandwich containing salami and are unsure if it contains recalled products are advised to contact the retailer where the sandwich was purchased.”

Salmonella is a food-borne bacterial illness that can spread several days or weeks after a person is infected, even if they don’t have symptoms.
