Potential Listeria In Chicken Alfredo Products Sold Nationwide

On Tuesday of this week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a recall for some ready-to-eat chicken Alfredo products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

We’ve been seeing the words listeria and listeriosis quite a bit in the news cycle recently. For those who aren’t familiar, here’s why listeria is so nasty:

It depends on who you are as to how bad listeria can actually be. For healthy individuals who get listeriosis (the illness caused by listeria), you’ll probably experience nothing more than some mild, flu-like symptoms.

Listeriosis is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems. It is very uncommon for people in other groups to become seriously ill with listeriosis. According to the CDC, around 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year, and about 260 die from it.

Federal Health Officials, Investigating A Multi-State Listeria Outbreak, Say That Certain Ready To Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo Products May Be Linked To That Outbreak

The company named in the recall, FreshRealm, announced a voluntary recall of three chicken fettuccine alfredo products sold at Walmart and Kroger stores nationwide.

FSIS.FDA.Gov:

FreshRealm establishments in San Clemente, Calif., Montezuma, Ga., and Indianapolis, Ind., are recalling chicken fettuccine alfredo products that may be adulterated with an outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Out of an abundance of caution, the company is voluntarily recalling all products produced prior to June 17, 2025.

So far, according to the CDC, the current listeria outbreak has sickened 17 people in 13 states (three in Texas, two each in Michigan and Louisiana, and one each in Nevada, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida).

There have also been three deaths reported, and one fetal loss.
