Cracker Recall: Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches Mislabeled as Cheese Sandwiches

If you’re about to pack up the car for a road trip, you might want to double-check your snacks. On Tuesday, July 8, Mondelēz Global announced a recall of Ritz Crackers due to a labeling error. The peanut butter Ritz crackers were mislabeled as cheese, which means that peanuts were not declared as an allergen on the label. This could result in very serious consequences for anyone with a peanut allergy. Here’s everything we know about the recall so far.

What caused the Ritz cracker recall?

Mondelēz Global announced the recall when it realized the Ritz cracker sandwiches were mislabeled. The outside cardboard carton packaging was correctly labeled as peanut butter, but some of the individual cellophane-wrapped packages of crackers inside were incorrect. These labels indicated that the cracker sandwiches were the cheese flavor, not peanut butter. As a result, the wrapping did not have the peanut allergen indicated on the label.

The labeling error was due to a supplier error, according to Mondelēz Global.

What stores sold the Ritz crackers?

The recall affects Ritz crackers shipped nationwide, and no grocery store is specified. So, if you have purchased Ritz crackers from any retailer, you’ll have to double-check them against the list below.

What should I do next?

If you do not have a peanut allergy, it’s not dangerous for you to eat the crackers, and therefore you do not have to do anything. If you do have a peanut allergy or sensitivity, do not consume the crackers. Throw them away, or bring them back to the store you purchased them from for a refund. If you feel ill, please seek medical attention. For any other questions or more information, you can contact Mondelēz Global directly at 1-844-366-1171.
