Mushroom recalls issued over listeria risk in U.S. markets
Two separate recalls have been issued in the United States due to potential contamination of
mushroom products with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may experience only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
On July 10, 2025, Wiet Peeters Farm Products Limited of Charing Cross, Ontario, Canada, announced a voluntary recall of several mushroom products distributed in Michigan and Ohio. These include Aunt Mid’s Fresh Sliced Mushrooms in a 227g flat blue plastic package marked with UPC 0 33383 676005 and best before date “25JL04” stamped on the side; Peeters Mushroom Farm Cremini Sliced in a 227g flat black plastic package with UPC 0 68414 96960 3 and the same best before date; and Peeters Mushroom Farm Thick Slice Mushroom in a 10lb cardboard box labeled with the company name.
The recall was initiated after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency detected the presence of
Listeria monocytogenes in the 227g packages of fresh sliced mushrooms. The other products were recalled as they were produced on the same manufacturing line. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Consumers are urged to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund and may contact the company at 1-519-351-1945 or toll-free at 1-800-364-1305 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST).
In a separate recall dated July 11, 2025, LLK TRADING INC. of Linden, New Jersey, announced the recall of its 200g packages of “Needle Mushrooms.” The affected product, packaged in clear plastic on top and blue non-transparent plastic on the bottom, was distributed to Bally Produce Corp. in Maspeth, New York, and sold to DATANG SUPERMARKET INC.
Routine FDA testing detected Listeria monocytogenes in a sampled package. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Sales of the product have been suspended while the company and the FDA continue investigating the source of contamination. Consumers who have purchased this product are advised to return it for a full refund and should not consume it.
