The class action lawsuit alleges the company violated federal law by sharing customer information with Facebook.
WASHINGTON — Have you purchased a video game from GameStop within the last few years? You may be eligible for a payout.
GameStop agreed to pay $4.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging that the company shared customers’ personal data to Facebook without their consent. The lawsuit alleges that GameStop violated federal law by violating the Video Privacy Protection Act, also known as VPPA.
The video game and electronics company did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
Who is eligible for a payment from the GameStop class action settlement?
The settlement is eligible for anyone who purchased a video game from the company’s website between Aug. 18, 2020, and Apr. 7, 2025, and who had a public Facebook profile with their name associated with it at the time of purchase.
Emails about the settlement were sent in June to customers who had purchased a video game from GameStop’s website. Though GameStop did not admit fault, it agreed to the settlement to avoid the uncertainties and expenses associated with continuing the case.
Anybody who got that email is likely included in the settlement’s members.
How much can you get from the GameStop settlement?
According to the email sent to potential class action members and the settlement’s official website, eligible individuals can receive either a cash payment of up to $5 or a voucher for the GameStop website worth up to $10.
It’s unclear how many people are expected to be eligible for the settlement.
How to file a claim for the GameStop settlement
First, check your email.
The payments are tied to a unique ID number provided by GameStop in the email about being a member of the class action suit. The ID number is a 10-character string of both numbers and letters.,
Anybody with one of the IDs can file a claim here any time before Aug. 15 in order to receive their payment.
Those who choose a voucher will have the credit added to the GameStop account associated with their email address.
Anyone receiving a cash payment will receive their money via Zelle, Venmo or PayPal.
Those who didn’t receive an email with a Unique ID but still think they are part of the settlement class can instead complete a paper claim form.
When can I expect my payment?
Payments may take some time, as they are contingent upon the court’s approval of the settlement.
A hearing has been set for Sept. 18, 2025. If approved, eligible customers can expect their payments 45 days after the settlement receives final approval or the appeals process is complete.
The voucher option will also be sent via email 45 days after the final settlement approval.
