A major recall has just been announced for above-ground swimming pools, spanning several notable brands.
On July 21, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that it was recalling five million above-ground swimming pools produced by popular brands, including Bestway, Intex, Coleman and Polygroup, from as far back as 2002 to the present.
Here’s everything you need to know about the pool recall.
What products have been recalled?
Distributors of the recalled pools include retailers: Amazon, Bestway USA, Big Lots, BJ’s, Costco, Funsicle, Intex, Kmart, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, Sears, Summer Waves, Target, The Home Depot, Toys “R” Us, Walmart and Wayfair.
These pools range in price from $400 to $1,000, depending on the size, model and accessories. The recall only affects pools that are 48 inches tall or more with compression straps running over vertical support legs along the outside of the pool.

What is the reason for the recall?
The above-ground swimming pools are being recalled over drowning hazards presented by the outside compression strap. The recall notice states that “[the strap] may create a foothold, allowing a child access to the pool, posing a drowning risk.”
It’s believed that nine children between the ages of one and three have drowned since 2007 due to these strap footholds, with reports of three additional children using the band to gain pool access.
This recall not only affects customers in the United States but customers in Canada as well, as 266,000 pools were believed to have been sold in the northern country.
What to do if you have the recalled product
The first thing you’ll want to do is verify whether you have one of the recalled pools. To do this, reference the information listed above, including the brand, model and sale date. If the information aligns with the pool in your possession, reach out to Bestway, Intex or Polygroup to request a repair kit.
While waiting for the kit to arrive, ensure the above-ground pool is out of reach from children. This can be best accomplished by preemptively draining the pool — a necessary step for the repair installation.
