Ford Is Number One In Recalls By A Long Shot

It’s official: Ford is number one for recalls this year, setting a new record for the number of recalls by an automaker in a year. And remember, we’re only about halfway through 2025, so the Blue Oval still has time to ensure nobody can get close to grabbing its illustrious title anytime soon.

Volkswagen goes patriotic in its latest ad campaign.

With a total number of recalls this year reaching 89, Ford has surpassed the previous record set by GM in 2014 with 77 recalls that year, thanks to the ignition switch scandal. Just keep in mind, Ford could easily double GM’s old record, maybe even get close to tripling it.

Before anyone starts arguing that automakers are all just issuing more recalls than ever before, know this: Ford itself has issued more recalls than the automakers in positions two, three, four, five, and six for recalls in 2025, combined, reports the Wall Street Journal.

This isn’t an industry problem, it’s a Ford problem.

But Ford’s been in this sort of position before. At the close of 2023, Ford racked up 56 recalls involving about 3 million vehicles, putting it in that enviable number one spot. Fiat Chrysler came in second that year with 45 recalls.

The big question everyone has is why is Ford issuing so many recalls in 2025? Well, the automaker had a string of explanations for the Wall Street Journal. You can decide if they’re legitimate, excuses, or whatever.

Ford pointed out nine recalls were “expansions of earlier recalls.”

The automaker says in March it performed an audit of recalls already issued, including some that just needed a software update. But Ford says 33 of its recalls this year resulted from that audit.

Kumar Galhotra, Ford’s chief operating officer, told the Journal, “The increase in recalls reflects our intensive strategy to quickly find and fix any hardware and software issues and go the extra mile to protect customers.”

Depending on where you sit, that either sounds like a plausible scenario where Ford’s just taking care of its customers or it’s evidence that Fords really are piles of junk.

Many of Ford’s recalls have been quite serious this year, like cars driving forward in reverse gear. What do you make of the company’s reason for setting a new record for recalls issued in a year only halfway through 2025?
