FDA reports multi-brand recall of canned tuna

NATIONWIDE — CANNED TUNA sold in several brands and supermarket lines has been recalled due to a threat of botulism, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and the Associated Press report. Tri-Union Seafoods of El Segundo, California, recalled certain lots of tuna sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s brand names.

The affected cans are believed to have defective  “easy open” lids that could cause leakages, making it easier for botulism-causing bacteria to grow. Their retail codes are listed in the recall notice and have best-by dates in 2027 and 2028. Consumers are advised to discard the affected cans or return them for refunds.

New York stores carrying the product included Trader Joe’s. The tuna was also sold at Harris Teeter, Publix, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart and some independent stores in several states.

Cans requiring handheld or electric openers were not mentioned in the recall,  which does not impact any other Tri-Union Seafoods products; the company manufactures the “Chicken of the Sea” brand.
