A popular travel accessory, recently banned by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), has been recalled due to a dangerous fire hazard.

The TSA revised its rules on portable chargers equipped with lithium-ion batteries in response to safety concerns. These items are now only permitted in carry-on luggage due to their potential to ignite fires if stowed in checked bags.

Meanwhile, one passenger has sent a TSA warning after an item in her carry-on bag causes 6-hour delay.

This technology is known for overheating and could potentially start fires, especially dangerous when unmonitored in an airplane’s cargo hold. Two major airlines, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, have even prohibited the use of these devices during flights.

One particular brand of portable charger has been recalled due to fire and burn risks. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of the Anker PowerCore 10000 power bank, specifically model A1263.

The commission states that the lithium-ion battery in the power bank can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards to users. The best way to avoid this is to replace the power bank, as reported by Express US, reports the Irish Star.

Anker has received 19 reports of fires and explosions, including two reports of minor burn injuries not requiring medical attention and 11 reports of property damage totaling over $60,700.

A recall announced on June 12 impacts over 1.2 million Anker PowerCore 10000 power banks sold in the US between June 1, 2016, and December 31, 2022. The affected products were manufactured between January 1, 2016, and October 30, 2019.

To identify the recalled product, check for the “Anker” brand engraved on the front and the model number “A1263” along with the serial number indicated by “SN” printed on the bottom.

Consumers are advised not to dispose of the recalled power bank in regular trash or recycling due to the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. Instead, proper disposal methods must be followed.

Anker is instructing customers to verify the serial and order numbers of their devices through the company’s online portal to determine if their units are affected by the recall.

If the product is confirmed to be recalled, customers should stop using it immediately and file a recall claim to receive potential compensation. Filing a claim requires providing personal contact details, proof of purchase, and a photo of the recalled item.

Once the claim is approved, customers must ensure the power bank is safely discarded at a local household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center.
