Portable chargers and power banks, common items in travelers’ carry-on luggage, are increasingly being scrutinized by TSA agents, and now Costco is recalling two models due to safety concerns.

These small, lightweight devices have flown under the radar for years, but recently, more travelers report that TSA agents are inspecting these items at security checkpoints, sometimes even confiscating them.

While not outright banned, these devices are subject to strict regulations that many travelers overlook, potentially costing them time or their charger at the airport. The TSA stipulates that lithium-ion batteries should never be packed in checked luggage. They are allowed in carry-on bags, but only if they meet specific requirements.

Portable chargers or power banks containing a lithium-ion battery must be packed in carry-on bags. Spare lithium batteries, including power banks and phone chargers, are prohibited in checked luggage.

Most airlines allow power banks with a watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100Wh or less in the cabin.

What items did Costco recall?

Meanwhile, Costco customers are being urged to review their recent purchases carefully. The retail giant has issued alerts for multiple product recalls that could pose significant safety hazards.

Nearly a dozen products have been pulled from store shelves in recent months, with alerts covering everything from fire dangers to mold.

The recalls span from contamination and bacterial problems to potential fingertip amputation hazards. Certain recalled products were bought directly from Costco stores, while others came through Costco Next, allowing shoppers to buy from brand sites at Costco rates.

What type of batteries are banned from TSA?

The most urgent recall concerns two Anker portable chargers sold via Costco Next. The A1257 version has been pulled due to a “potential issue involving lithium-ion battery cells,” with consumers told to stop using the gadget immediately.

Another device, the Powercore 10000 (Model A1263), is being recalled because it has the potential to overheat and ignite a fire.

Air conditioning systems from Danby and Midea manufacturers, sold under different labels including Frigidaire and Mr. Cool, are also facing recalls, according to the Mirror US.

The U-shaped window versions reportedly fail to remove moisture properly, which can lead to mold growth that may trigger respiratory issues. The warning tells users to stop operating them immediately.

A seasoned traveler has issued a crucial warning to anyone who enjoys flying with portable chargers. To clarify the situation, internet personality Travel Tips By Laurie offered her guidance. The pilot’s spouse, who travels frequently, warned her audience about regulation changes taking effect later this month.

Discussing a policy Southwest Airlines will enforce on May 28, she explained: “Here’s one new travel tip for you. All power banks are combustable. You are no longer allowed to have your power bank or portable. Keep your e-charger or phone charger plugged into your phone in your personal item bag, under your airplane seat, or in the overhead bins.”

The good news is – nobody is ever going to charge their phone in their carry-on bag in the overhead bin. So, I think we’re safe. It’s one way to make sure they’re not near other bags in the overhead bins and catch on fire for no reason.

“[Southwest Airlines] have made a rule and now we think other airlines are going to make a rule that you cannot charge your phone in the overhead bins or in your carry-on suitcase.”
