NEWARK — ChristianaCare hosted a community Trauma Prevention Fair on Monday, bringing together local health organizations, first responders, and public safety officials for a day of education, prevention, and community engagement.

Organizers say the goal is to promote health and safety through interactive programming for all ages.

“The Trauma Prevention Fair aims to raise awareness about injury prevention through educational initiatives within our organization and the community we serve,” said Lisa Fellin, RN, Injury Prevention Coordinator at ChristianaCare’s Trauma Department.

“In addition to collaborating with external organizations, ChristianaCare is partnering with the Blood Bank of Delmarva to host the blood drive.”

ChristianaCare departments—including Safe Steps, Strong Bones & Injury Prevention, the Hospital Violence Prevention Program, and the Pediatric Care Center—participated alongside community partners such as the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, Nemours Children’s Hospital, New Castle County Police and Paramedics, and the State Council for Persons with Disabilities.

ChristianaCare’s recent trauma data reveals that “58% of injuries are related to falls,” said Fellin. “This highlights the critical importance of addressing safety measures and prevention strategies, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly.” She added that “motor vehicle crashes are the second most common cause of injury,” further underscoring the need for “safe driving practices and road safety awareness.”

That’s why collaboration with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety is a key part of the fair.

“We frequently collaborate with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety to focus on reducing the number of motor vehicle crashes and ensuring pedestrian safety,” said Fellin. “Together, our goal is to decrease injuries related to motor vehicle accidents through education and awareness-raising initiatives.”
