Children’s Cough Syrup Recalled Over Bacterial Contamination

A children‘s cough remedy sold by retailers across Indiana and the nation has been recalled after it was discovered that some batches of the product are contaminated with a dangerous bacteria.

The affected products were manufactured by Medtech Products Inc., a Prestige Consumer Healthcare Inc. company, and were sold online and in stores across the country between December 14, 2022, and June 4, 2025.

What Is Bacillus Cereus and Why Is It Dangerous?

The bacteria, Bacillus cereus is a spore-forming bacteria that can cause foodborne illness in those exposed to it. There are actually two types of Bacillus cereus infections. One is the result of the toxins produced by the bacteria inside the body after it is ingested, and the other occurs after the bacteria produce toxins inside food that is then consumed.

What Symptoms to Watch For

Once ingested, the toxins produced in the small intestine by the bacteria rarely cause vomiting, but can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, cramps, and nausea. Symptoms resulting from ingesting food that contains the other type of toxin can include nausea and vomiting.

How Long Do Symptoms Last?

Symptoms generally begin between 30 minutes and six hours after consuming contaminated food for the vomiting (emetic) type, but can take between six to fifteen hours for the diarrheal type. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, symptoms typically subside within 24 hours of initial onset.

Although both forms of foodborne illness associated with the diarrheal and vomiting toxins produced by B. cereus are generally mild and self-limiting, more severe and fatal forms of the illness have been reported. Other clinical manifestations of B. cereus invasion and infection that have been observed include severe systemic and pyogenic infections, gangrene, septic meningitis, cellulitis, panophthalmitis, lung abscesses, infant death, and endocarditis, and, in cows, bovine mastitis. – FDA

How Common Are Bacillus Cereus Infections?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 63,400 illnesses annually are caused by Bacillus cereus infectionsFoods like meat, vegetables, fish, and milk are linked to the diarrheal type of Bacillus cereus infections. Meanwhile, the emetic, or vomiting type, is often associated with improperly stored starchy foods like rice, pasta, and potatoes. Other pre-mixed food products like sauces, puddings, salads, and pastries have also been linked to Bacillus cereus infections.
