Various ready-to-eat meals are currently being recalled due to possible listeria contamination that may be linked to numerous deaths and hospitalizations. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the food recall last week, urging consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for affected products.

FreshRealm, a food manufacturer, issued a voluntary recall of chicken fettuccine alfredo food products on June 17. These ready-to-eat meals were distributed nationwide and were shipped to Kroger and Walmart retail locations. The products may be contaminated with an outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes, according to the USDA.

There is an ongoing outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes that has resulted in 17 illnesses across 13 states, including three deaths and one loss of a fetus. While not directly linked to these meals, the same outbreak strain was found in a FreshRealm chicken alfredo sample, and purchase records from two ill people have been traced back to food products from FreshRealm establishments.

The investigation is ongoing, including into whether a specific ingredient in the products is linked to the Listeria contamination. The USDA is also warning customers who may have the affected products in their refrigerators or freezers not to consume them.

What to do with recalled products

The USDA is concerned that some of these affected products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers, and urges consumers who have any affected items in their possession not to consume them. Instead, throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
