Walmart, Kroger and other retailers are recalling a type of Lewis Bake Shop bread in 12 U.S. states due to an undeclared life-threatening allergen.
Six lots of Hartford Bakery Inc.’s Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf have been recalled due to “undeclared hazelnuts” in the product, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“People with a nut allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products,” the FDA stated.
There have been no major reports of injury or illness, according to the federal agency; however, one consumer “experienced digestive discomfort after consumption.” Hartford Bakery has also received complaints from consumers who saw the hazelnuts before consuming the bread.
The recalled products were distributed to various retailers in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama and Mississippi. The FDA specified Kroger and Walmart as two stores that carry the product.

The loaves of bread were voluntarily recalled after Hartford Bakery discovered about 883 loaves of the bread contained visible hazelnuts.
“While the packaging states ‘May Contain Tree Nuts,’ it does not state that it ‘Contains Hazelnuts,’ ” the FDA said, adding that an investigation confirmed an error in the packaging.
“Out of an abundance of caution,” per the FDA, the food company is removing all units of the product in the affected lot codes.
PEOPLE reached out to Hartford Bakery, Kroger and Walmart for additional information but did not immediately receive responses.
