Key Takeaways

The department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall on 143,416 pounds of Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc. ready-to-eat deli bologna because of mislabeling.
The products do not declare on the label that they contain beef, chicken, or pork source materials.

FSIS considers Class III a low-risk recall where using the product will not cause adverse health problems, however undeclared ingredients and allergens are a concern for some.

If you’ve been packing bologna sandwiches for the pool, make sure the lunch meat isn’t part of a recent recall by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The bologna products were produced under various names and labels between March 20 and June 20, 2025, and include the following items:

  • Vacuum-packed packages of “Family Tree Bologna Veal” containing undeclared pork
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “Babushka’s Recipe Chicken Bologna” containing undeclared pork
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “Fancy Bologna” containing undeclared beef and chicken
  • Vacuum-packed packages of “Gaiser’s Russian Brand Doktorskaya Bologna” containing undeclared beef
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “Gaiser’s Bologna Veal” containing undeclared chicken and pork
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “Gaiser’s Turkey Bologna” containing undeclared chicken and pork
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “Chicken Bologna Kypoyka Paba” containing undeclared pork

A complaint through the hotline of the Office of the Inspector General prompted FSIS to investigate the problem. The recalled products were distributed nationwide to wholesale and retail locations with the label “EST. 5285” listed on the USDA mark of inspection. Some products were wrapped and labeled in stores, while others were sold in vacuum-sealed or plastic-wrapped packaging.

“Although FSIS does not expect any adverse health effects for Class III recalled products and there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider,” the FSIS states.

FSIS considers Class III a low-risk recall where using the product will not cause adverse health problems, however undeclared ingredients and allergens are a concern for some.

Restaurants and stores are urged not to sell or serve these deli meats. If you have purchased any of these items, the FSIS says not to consume them, but instead to throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased.

Consumers may visit the FSIS site for images of recalled products, or contact Gaiser’s European Style Provisions at (908) 686-3421 or [email protected] with questions.
