8 ON YOUR SIDE CONSUMER ALERT: Canned tuna sold at Walmart, Publix and Kroger stores in Alabama has been recalled because of a botulism risk.
In Alabama, the recall affects 5-ounce cans of Genova tuna. Some of it was also sold at independent stores in Alabama, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
This recall also includes several other brands of canned tuna that were sold at stores in other states outside of Alabama.
The FDA says the tuna may contain a type of bacteria that causes botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
Tri-Union Seafoods of El Segundo, California, is recalling certain lots of tuna sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s brand names, the FDA says.
The company said that lids on the “easy open” cans may have a manufacturing defect that could cause the products to leak or to become contaminated with the bacteria that causes botulism.
The affected products have retail codes listed in the recall notice and best-by dates in 2027 and 2028.
Here is the complete list of products recalled and where they were sold:
- H-E-B label – Texas
- Trader Joe’s label – Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin
- Genova 7 oz. – Costco in Florida and Georgia
- Genova 5 oz. – Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas
- Van Camp’s label – Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida and New Jersey
No illnesses have been reported to date, the company said. Consumers should not consume the recalled tuna even if it doesn’t look or smell spoiled. Return the recalled tuna to the store for a full refund, throw it away or contact Tri-Union Seafoods.
Botulism is a rare but serious illness that occurs when a toxin caused by the bacteria attacks the body’s nerves. It can cause difficulty breathing, paralysis and death.
