Nut Recall Update for 8 States As FDA Sets Risk Level

A nut recall has been given a Class II classification by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to an undeclared walnut ingredient.

Why It Matters

Per the FDA, a Class II recall represents a situation where “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The FDA’s other recall classes include Class III, which are applied in “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences,” and a Class I recall, the most serious. This is applicable in “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

What To Know

According to a release from the FDA, a voluntary recall was initiated on December 4 last year by Pecan Star & Nut Corp, of San Antonio, Texas. The classification date was given as February 3.

Due to undeclared walnuts, 7,920 bags of “Greenwise Organic Pecan Halves” in 8-ounce, plastic printed packages marked with lot number of 0000018228 and with a best by date of April 23, 2025, were recalled by the company.

The release indicated the product in question was distributed to eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

A statement from the firm said the recall was initiated after it was found that a product containing walnuts was distributed in packaging that did not indicate their presence. A follow-up investigation revealed that the issue occurred due to incorrect packaging materials being supplied to the production line.

Newsweek previously compiled a list of all the food recalls shared by the FDA and the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service from January 1 to January 31. Multiple recalls were issued nationwide last month due to undeclared allergens, potential salmonella and listeria contamination, possible foreign matter contamination, and other safety concerns.
