RECALL: More meat pulled from shelves amid Salmonella outbreak in Canada

Another meat product has been recalled in Canada amid an investigation into a Salmonella outbreak, officials say.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said that Rea brand Soppressata Salami Sweet is the latest recalled product.

It is variable in size, has the UPC number 8 41571 04220 0 and the code 5050 224.

“The affected product is being recalled from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination,” the agency said.

It was distributed in Ontario, Alberta, and Quebec.

It’s not clear if there have been any confirmed illnesses related to the latest recalled meat.

The agency said the recall is related to three other meat products that have been pulled from shelves in Canada due to possible Salmonella contamination.

There have been 84 confirmed illnesses related to those products, with nine hospitalizations, the Public Health Agency of Canada said. No deaths have been reported.

The affected products are the Bona brand Mild Genova Salami, Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, and Rea Genoa Salami Hot.

The Bona salami came in variable sizes, doesn’t have a UPC number and has the code 5035 226.

The Rea sweet salami also came in variable sizes, has the UPC number 8 41571 04226 2 and the codes 5035 226 and 5049 226.

And lastly, the Rea hot salami also came in various sizes, has the UPC number 8 41571 04228 6, as well as the codes 5020 228 and 5035 228.

“These products may have been sold clerk-served from deli counters with or without a label or coding,” the CFIA said.

PHAC said the meat may have also been used and sold in prepared products like sandwiches.

Many became ill after eating salami in prepared sandwiches or eating salami that was bought from deli counters, PHAC said.

The meat was distributed in Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba to grocery stores, specialty markets, restaurants, cafes, delis and butcher shops.

But PHAC said “this outbreak may not be limited to the provinces or territories with known illnesses.”

While most of the illnesses reported are in Alberta with 67 people sickened, the outbreak also affects Ontario, where 15 people have been ill, as well as Manitoba with one person sick. One illness reported in B.C. is related to travel to Alberta.

“Consumers or establishments who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled products are advised to contact their retailer or supplier where the products were purchased,” PHAC said.

“Consumers who have purchased a prepared sandwich containing salami and are unsure if it contains recalled products are advised to contact the retailer where the sandwich was purchased.”

Salmonella is a food-borne bacterial illness that can spread several days or weeks after a person is infected, even if they don’t have symptoms.

PHAC said more illnesses may continue to be reported.

More information on the outbreak can be found on the Government of Canada website.
