Check the loaves of bread in your pantry. Hartford Bakery, Inc. is recalling its Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf product as it may contain undeclared hazelnuts, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The bread was distributed to retailers like Kroger and Walmart in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, and Mississippi.

The recalled product involves six affected lot codes (T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306, and T10 174020406), which can be found on the front of the packaging; no other lot codes are affected.

The bread comes in a flexible plastic bag with a net weight of 12 ounces (340 grams) and UPC 24126018152 listed on the bottom of the packaging. An expiration date of July 13, 2025 can be found on the front of the bag.

The company discovered that approximately 883 loaves of bread from the six production lots contained visible hazelnuts, triggering the voluntary recall. While the packaging states “May Contain Tree Nuts,” it does not state that it “Contains Hazelnuts.”

There have been no major reports of injury or illness so far, but Hartford Bakery is aware of one customer who experienced digestive discomfort after eating the bread. The company also received consumer complaints from those who saw the nuts before consuming the product.

People with a nut allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the recalled product, including anaphylaxis, a reaction that impairs breathing and can send the body into shock. Symptoms of a tree nut allergy include abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, itching, nasal congestion or a runny nose, and shortness of breath, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

If you or anyone in your household has a tree nut allergy or severe sensitivity, don’t consume the bread. Throw it away or return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Hartford Bakery at 1-812-425-4642, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. CST.
