Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Recalled After Labeling Error Poses Allergy Risk
Consumers of Ritz Crackers are being urged to check their snack shelves for products that could pose a serious risk for those with peanut allergies.
On July 8, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall announcement from Mondelēz Global LLC, the parent company behind Ritz, regarding a voluntary recall of several varieties of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches.
In a statement issued to TODAY.com, a Mondelēz spokesperson confirmed that the company issued a voluntary recall encompassing four sizes of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches in the United States.
Representatives for Ritz Crackers did not immediately respond to TODAY.com’s request for comment.
Here’s what we know so far.
Why are Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches being recalled?
The voluntary recall was triggered after it was discovered that individually wrapped Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches were incorrectly labeled as cheese-flavored. While the outer cartons of the packages are correctly marked and include peanut allergen warnings, the inner packages might not, which poses a risk for individuals with peanut allergies.
In the FDA’s announcement regarding the recall, it noted that people with an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may be at risk for “life-threatening allergic reactions.”
Which Ritz products are included in the recall?
The current recall affects the following products, which are sold in retail stores nationwide. To confirm whether your product is part of the recall, check for the item’s “Best When Used By Dates” and “Plant Code” located on top of each package.
Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches: 8-count
RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches: 20-count
Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches: 40-count
Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack: 20-count
What should I do if my product has been recalled?
Consumers with peanut allergies are being advised not to consume any of the identified products and to discard any affected packages.
Mondelēz International advises that consumers who have checked the packaging and found their products’ UPC, plant code or expiration date is mentioned in the recall can contact the company at 1-844-366-1171 for more information.
Has anyone become sick?
As of now, Mondelēz International says no injuries or allergic reactions related to the mislabeling have been reported.
