Tips to help manage food recalls and prevent foodborne illnesses

About 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 people die each year from preventable foodborne illnesses.

The Food and Drug Administration has made a stark update to a December recall of millions of granola bars from MadeGood, warning customers they “may contain metal pieces,” according to the agency.

The FDA’s updated recall comes after Chicago-based Riverside Natural Food, an organic snack manufacturer, voluntarily recalled certain products in December due to possible contamination and the possible adverse health risk associated with ingesting the baked oat bars.

The FDA boosted the recall status to Class II, which refers to products that could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, according to the agency. It is more serious than Class III, which is likely not to cause adverse health consequences.

MadeGood products are sold nationwide and often found in retail stores across New Jersey, including Walmart, Target and Whole Foods, as well as at multiple convenience stores and on Amazon. Here’s more information about what products have been recalled and what to do if you purchased them in New Jersey.

Why are MadeGood granola bars recalled?

The FDA cited the fact that the MadeGood granola bars “may contain metal pieces” as justifying a Class II recall status. MadeGood said it received seven complaints that prompted the recall, but assured it was made “out of abundance of caution and commitment to the well-being of our valued customers.”

The metal in the bars would have been a small, flat brush bristle used in the manufacturing process, according to MadeGood. The recall was initially made on Dec. 9.

No injuries have been reported, MadeGood said, and the company said it was an “isolated issue” in the manufacturing process that prompted the recall, adding that it worked with retailers to ensure recalled products were removed from store shelves.
