There’s bad news for Chevrolet fans
GM (General Motors) is on spotlight again...62,000 units of the Chevrolet Silverado are issuing a recall, why? Well, they are now involved in a new drama in our country! These vehicles are being withdrawn due to a serious (and new) fire risk related to the brakes… Scary!!!
General Motors itself has acknowledged that a defect in the brake pressure system can cause short circuits and overheating… and of course, this has set off all the alarms in the automotive industry as it is normal.
There are no victims reported for the moment (thank God), but the company has asked users to park their vehicles outside and away from any buildings… until the issue is fixed. What? Is it really that dangerous?
What is happening with GM?
Let’s explain it step by step. As they have informed, the problem in these Silverados is located in the brake pressure sensor assembly. Ok, wait, let’s explain it. This is a component that regulates part of the hydraulic system, ok? The problem appears here when the brake fluid leaks into the sensor, because it can cause electrical short circuits and it can overheat the circuit and trigger a fire…. Even when the vehicle is parked or turned off! A real panic, don’t you think?
Which vehicle are we talking about?
The recall affects 62,468 units from the following model: 2023Chevrolet Silverado 5500 HD model, manufactured between January 20, 2023 and March 19, 2024.
The NHTSA issued the notice last June 25, but GM had already informed its dealers on the 12th of the same month, so everything indicates that owners will begin receiving their letters notifying them starting on July 28, then, they will have to carry their vehicles to the nearest dealership to check and correct the fault.
What should owners do?
Following the instructions, and until the vehicles are repaired, GM recommends parking the affected vehicles outdoors, away from houses, garages or other buildings, just in case of fire risk.
It is not a suggestion, itis a preventive measure because these vehicles are a potential fire risk, so please be careful!!
Free repair
Of course, and as it was expected, General Motors has committed to replace the brake sensor wiring harness free of charge for those affected users, obviously!
For any questions or to know if your model is affected by this recall, you can contact GM at 1-866-467-9700 or the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236, referring to recall number N242482680 or 25V390 on the official website nhtsa.gov by introducing the VIN number of your vehicle.
A story that repeats itself
Of course, it is not new for GM to issue recalls due to engine defects… This new failure is just one more in the recent history of the brand, in which the company has been forced to recall several vehicles due to similar potential risks…
This time there are no lawsuits in this case (thankfully), but the company is currently facing a class-action lawsuit related to its 6.2-liter V8 engines, accused of forcing drivers to spend more on fuel due to mechanical failures they allegedly already knew about!!
Safety at the centre of the debate
We are seeing more and more vehicle recalls due to technical failures (not only GM but many others), especially with the increase in complex electronic components… Are brands neglecting safety to offer more technology? Or do they care more about design than a proper safety system?
Safety should never be negotiable…
More than 62,000 vehicles recalled due to fire risk is a frightening number, and owners should act quickly and carefully, but calmly. General Motors, for its part, seems to have learned from past mistakes and has responded quickly, offering free solutions, thank goodness!
