Citroen Ireland / DS Ireland safety recall now for circa 2,000 cars

Citroen Ireland and DS Automobiles Ireland have extended their safety recalled of nearly 2,000 vehicles. It says that it has contacted the owners of those vehicles. They are affected by a serious airbag safety issue, so Citroen is advising them not to drive their cars until the issue is resolved.

The vehicles included in this safety recall in the Republic of Ireland were produced between 2008 and 2017. And Citroen has been engaged since last year in a recall of cars due to airbag concerns, and this recall has now been extended to include other models. The line-up of car models now impacted includes the DS3, DS4 and DS5.

The official line from Stellantis, which owns the Citroen vehicles brand, is that it is “recalling all affected vehicles using a staggered approach, to ensure safety first and service all customers in the fastest and most efficient way. It means that we are recalling the affected cars step by step, with prioritisation for the oldest vehicles because of the behaviour of the chemical components over time in the Takata airbags”.

Tens of millions of vehicles with Takata air bags are under recall. Long-term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause these air bags to explode when deployed. Such explosions have caused injuries and deaths elsewhere in the world.

Citroen Ireland is carrying out a stop-drive recall of certain Citroen C3 and C-Zero model vehicles. A safety issue has been identified whereby the chemical substances in the inflators of these Takata airbags may deteriorate over time, particularly in warm, humid climates. This could cause the airbag to burst with too much force in the event of an accident, which could lead to serious or even fatal injuries in the worst-case scenario.

There are 1,162 vehicles affected in the Republic of Ireland that were produced between 2008 and 2017.

Citroen Ireland has requested all vehicle owners of certain Citroen C3 and C-Zero model vehicles to stop driving their vehicle immediately until the airbags have been replaced by an authorised dealership.

Citroen Ireland is carrying out a voluntary recall of certain Citroen C3 model vehicles.

A safety issue has been identified whereby the chemical substances in the inflators of these Takata airbags may deteriorate over time, particularly in warm, humid climates. This could cause the airbag to rupture with too much force in the event of an accident, which could lead to serious or even fatal injuries in the worst-case scenario.

There are 1,400 vehicles affected in the Republic of Ireland that were produced between 07 April 2009 and 21 February 2017.

Sister-brand DS Automobiles is also subject to a similar safety recall.

There are 707 vehicles affected in the Republic of Ireland that were produced between 2016 and 2019.

DS Ireland has requested all vehicle owners of certain DS 3 model vehicles to stop driving their vehicle immediately until the airbags have been replaced by an authorised dealership.

Citroen and DS Automobiles were two of many car manufacturers which used Takata airbags and have also had to issue safety recall notices.

Citroen & DS Automobile car models affected (their dates of manufacture):

  • Citroen C3 Phase 2 (from 24.09.2008 to 21.02.2017)
  • Citroen C4 (from 02.02.2010 to 20.05.2018)
  • Citroen C Zéro (from 10.2010 to 02.2017)
  • DS 3 (from 05.12.2008 to 30.05.2019)
  • DS 4 (from 05.05.2010 to 03.02.2017)
  • DS 5 (from 30.06.2010 to 09.02.2018)

The DS 4 and DS 5 and C4 have had an airbag recall campaign in progress for some time (since 2024), although the issue is different and does not to the same level of risk as that 1,800 C3 and DS 3 models that are subject to the ‘Stop Drive’ launched just over a week ago.

A Citroen Ireland spokesperson said that all original Irish registered cars have already received two rounds of safety recall notifications in advance of Stellantis launching the ‘Stop Drive’ warning, with these letters dating back to January 2025.

Since the ‘Stop Drive’, some have now received three letters, the latest being via registered post and including the current owners of hundreds of models imported second-hand (a total of circa 1,800 owners). This was possible after they received those ownership details from the Department of Transport.
